Comic Book Review#141: DMZ, Vol.1: On The Ground(2006)

Awright, here comes the fourth International Week! And again, we start with a Comic Book Review. Here we go...

DMZ stands for "Demilitarized Zone", an area where military isn't allowed to operate. For example in a war between two states. In the DMZ Comic, such zone is Manhattan. In near future a second civil broke out and divided the USA in two parties. The United States of America and the secessionist Free States.

Matt Roth, a young Journalist who wants to boost his carrier has a fuckton of luck. He is chosen to assist on a report in Manhattan. But after he, the security crew and his Boss land, everybody but him gets killed. Shortly after that he learns to know Zee, a young Tank-Girl-Type medic who cures wounded DMZ-Citizens. After the United States try to save him, and "securing" the area - which means shooting the fuck out of everything with a helicopter -, he decides to stay at the DMZ and write a report about the life in there.

He learns how people live, where do they get food and meds from and that not everything there is shitty as hell. Also, he learns to know more people and their specific views and attitudes.

Damn, that's cool as fuck! Nice to read something that isn't that far away from reality. Remember Ukraine? Terrific story by Brian Wood and art by Riccardo Burchielli. Available at Vertigo.
