Album of the week, episode 143: MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday(1999)

Allright, I'll try to keep it short.
My international readers probably do not know what kind of hip-hop I like to listen to, that's why I'd like to explain it. The sort of hiphop which I like is either aggressive as hell but highly intelligent or smooth as fuck, oldschool and has witty lyrics. MF Doom is both.

His lyrics may sound passiv-aggressive when he disses whack MCs but at the same time he remains cool. Or even better: the beats are nice and slow so when
you don't understand any english you will think that the lyrics are about rainbows and unicorns. I, for example didn't get the lyrics of "Doomsday" at first, but was convinced through the samplings of Sade's beautiful voice that the song is highly positive. Of course it is, it's about MF Doom himself.

Metal Face(when it comes to rapping) or Metal Fingers(when it's about producing) talks about his persona, his past and present life and how he misses his brother . He reminisces old days of smoking blunts and "people get jumped". He makes a shit ton of references to pop culture. Mostly about the villain Victor van Doom from the 1967 "Fantastic Four" cartoon. "Operation: Doomsday" even samples the series couple of times in the interludes. Other bits come from classic rappers as Kool G Rap or The Deele's "Shoot'em up Movies". But there are other songs such as "Who you think I am" which tells us more about monsters from the Monster Island(better known from the original Godzilla Movies). The song "hey" uses samples from the original "Scooby Doo" series. Well, that's awesome as fuck.

Pop culture samples, sick lyrics which can't get out your head, smooth, chill as fuck beats. Everything that makes up a hella good hiphop album in my ears. Definitely a must-listen-to. Also, I love the fact that MF was one of the first rappers wearing a mask.

9/10 deposite bottles.
