Movie of the week#133: Top Secret!(1984)

Here he comes: Nick Rivers(Val Kilmer's first movie performance), an Elvis/Beach-Boys like Rock'n'Roll-Top-Artist of the moment. His songs "Skeet Surfin'", "Skeet City" and other titles with "skeet" in it are conquering the charts. Nick's next stop on his tour is East Germany(aka GDR) where he will perform at a cultural festival. The happening will be transmitted via satellite and be seen all around the globe. Even if the East Germans are speaking a terrifying nazi language and the people are being terrorised in the street everything seems to pretty okay. But Nick makes a terrible mistake. He saves the life of Hilary Flammond(Lucy Gutteridge), who is the daughter of Dr. Paul Flammond(Michael Gough) who is being held hostage and forced to invent a magnetic weapon for the GDR government. He gets himself in a lot of trouble, since Hilary is a member of the French Resistance who is planning a revolution. And actually the whole cultural festival thing is a huge distraction, so the government can outmaneuvre western submarines with their magnetic weapon...

Yeah, I know how it does sound. It makes ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING SENSE!
But that's totally okay, because this marvellous slapstick flick comes from the trio Zucker/Abraham/Zucker(aka ZAZ) which is known for their spoof movies such as "Airplane" or "Naked Gun". Therefore, it's okay that this movie doesn't make sense. The important thing is the action and not the plot. That's how the ZAZ movies work. Throughout the movie you can see grenades that explode at the wrong moment, people falling down and shattering into pieces, giant pigeons who shit big piles, Peter Cushing(aka Grand Moff Tarkin), hilarious nazi-like GDR-Generals/Officials and so on. Holy fuck, it was so much fun watching it. And it's much more fun watching it in german, because many of the jokes were translated in a very unique way.
