The 101st Comic Book Review is a double feature. I decided to do it so, 'cause both comics feature the superhero Martian Manhunter aka John Jones aka J'onn J'onnz. I simply wanted to kill two birds with one stone.
1. Justice League America#59(1992)
"Justice League International" is a comic book series which lasts from the end of the 80ies until today. Alongside this comic, there are other similar ones like "Justice League America", "Justice League Antarctis" and "Justice League Europe"... The JLI is a special incarnation of the Justice League sponsored by the United Nations. It was founded by a rich businessman named Maxwell Lord.However, in 1992 the JLA consisted superheroes such as Batman, the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Booster Gold, the Beetle, Power Girl, Dr. Fate, Captain Marvel and of course Martian Manhunter. The Issue#59 is the 13th part of the "Breakdowns"-Story-Arc during which Maxwell Lord was shot in an assassination attempt. Now, a bodyless creature which calls itself "the dreamslayer" possesses several members of the league(for example: the Flash) in order to get to Maxwell Lord. In the end he possesses Maxwell's mind and brings him to the island of Kooeykoeeykoeey. The JLA arrives there and of course wants Maxwells body back. But it ain't easy when Dreamslayer is controlling the minds of Kooeykooeykooes's natives which attack our heroes.
That's it. The whole arc is actually about personal dramas which occure in lives of the members of the JLA. The issues focuses only on the battle on the island with the long name, though. It isn't drawn bad, it's typical 90ies art though. Although not as bad as Liefeld and such. But I noticed the little details like: the butt of the superheroine "Fire" MUST be looking straight at the reader and...um...holy fuck! why are Martian Manhunter frontal bones THAT big? How the actual fuck can he see anything... The dialogues are pretty funny. The Elongated Man, the Bettle and Guy Gardner seem to have a funny bone. The Cover is pretty cool, too. I give it 7 out of 10 deposite bottles

2. Martian Manhunter#24(2000)
Now, THIS one totally rules! J'onn J'onez tells an important story. During the Justice League International Era he used to live with Fire, Booster Gold, Ice, the Beetle and Guy Gardner in one appartment. AND he was totally addicted to cookies. So called chocos, which were a rip-off of the oreos. Booster Gold and the Beetle wanted to prank him by stealing his chocos and buying every single pack of chocos in every store in the city.
That wasn't a good idea - because J'onn is REALLY addicted. After no grocery store has his favorite cookies he goes berzerk. Hulk style. "MARS NEEDS CHOCOS!", "BRING J'ONN COOKIES!" and "J'ONN CRUSH!!" are the slogans. Finally he calms down after he finds a huge amount of chocos in a a storage hall.(Booster Gold and Beetle left them there)...
In the end he has a very important meeting with Batman and Maxwell Lord. They suppose that he is really addicted, because a martian body may react different to cookies than a human body. Finally, J'onn decides to push away the addiction cells from his body. After that, the "addiction"(which looks like the venom symbiote by the way) takes over the other heros. Guy Gardner suddenly craves safety and Ice craves...baby seals...sauteéd in their owen fat and served with lettuce, tomato, cheese, onion and special sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun! Holy fuck! Oh yeah, and Maxwell Lord craves none other than Wonder Woman.I had a blast reading this issue! Totally worth the one euro it costed! :D
And J'onn J'onnz doesnt have those horrible frontal bones!
